ments on the table scarf. One was long and tubelike. Another looked like a triangular knife at the end of a long stick. I looked at his face. His skin hung loosely from his skull. His lips were thin and bitten and the top of his head gleamed yellow under his oily hair. I didn't like him.
"Who's got the money?" he asked. "It's here," Polly said, holding out an envelope; "you can have it when you're finished." "Now or I don't do it at all," he said. She hesitated, then handed him the envelope. "Where's the man responsible?" he asked; he was washing his hands in the basin. "He's at a friend's house," I said. "Keep him away from here," he said. "You don't have to worry," Polly said. "Lie down," he said to me; "on your back." I did as I was told. "Spread your legs," he said. "Give me that tube," he told Polly. I felt something cold slip between my legs. It pushed into me until I thought it would rip me open inside. "You're in trouble all right," he said. "Hold it," he said to Polly. I turned my head and watched him take the long, narrow knife from the dresser.
"Look, girls," he said, "we've had a lot of trouble with the law lately. You're going to have to use the knife yourself. I'll put it in position, but you'll have to turn it and push it in." "Just a minute!" Polly hissed; "we're not giving you all that money to do this ourselves. You promised to do it!" He threw the envelope down on the bed next to me. "It's yours," he said; "I'll just pack up." "No," I said, "you have to do it." "Little lady," he said nastily, "I don't have to do anything I don't want to do." "Well, you better do this," said Polly, "or I'll get the police." "That's ugly talk," Grimsby said, walking toward her. "Get away from her," I said; "put the knife in place. I'll use it." "You don't have to do that!" Polly cried; "that's not what we're paying him for." "Let's get it over with," I said. "See how sensible your friend is?" Grimsby told Polly; "and she's the one who has to use the knife."
"Now," he said, bending over me. He stank of sweat and smoke; my stomach turned. "Take deep breaths," he said. "I'm slipping the knife down the tube. I'll tell you when it's at the entrance to the cervix. You'll feel it. You'll have to push it in. Work it back and forth. Like this." He held his wrist near my head and twisted it back and forth. "Like that." he said; "work it in slowly." "Will it hurt?" I asked. "It's a knife, isn't it?" he asked. He went back to the foot of the bed and bent down between my legs. I saw his hand holding the knife and then it disappeared into the tube. When I felt the
